Community Garden

Project Background

Back in 2008 the Down to Earth Foundation identified the need for growing space from local feedback in questionnaires in and around Porthtowan. Many local people said that they would like to grow their own fruit and vegetables but do not have the space.

In April 2010 The Down to Earth Foundation offered six locals space for a pilot plot and it was through this plot named ‘Pirans Patch’ they discovered that despite the exposed site, a productive vegetable garden was possible if rabbits and slugs were kept at bay!

The Current Project

In early Autumn 2010, the Mount Pleasant Community Garden was launched and the first six organic vegetable plots were levelled and rotavated. With funds raised at our garden launch party, both plot holders and DTEF volunteers rabbit-proofed the allotments ready for the new growing season – a tough but rewarding task!

The future of the project!

The Community Garden has grand ideas for the future at Mount Pleasant! A rainwater harvesting system and communal polytunnel have recently been completed and future projects include a communal composting facility and community orchard. We aim to support the ethos of the Eco Park by providing a productive, sustainable and beautiful community space for all to enjoy.
